When Whitney Straight took delivery of 8CM Maserati No. 3011 and adapted it to his specifications in 1934, he created a unique race car that would continue to compete far beyond anyone’s dreams.

Actively campaigned for over 60 years this car is probably the most significant single seat racing Maserati of all time.

Today this Maserati is owned by Peter Giddings. He campaigns it in Historic Automobile Racing Events. Barring mechanical problems, the car is virtually unbeatable.

Historic photographs and documents recall bygone days at Brooklands, Shelsley-Walsh and Goodwood.

A Boy and a Dream

Share a reflective moment with Peter Giddings (he didn't know the camera was on) as he looks at photographs of 3011 which he took as a boy. Little did he know then that years later he would drive 3011 for the first time at the Bangkok (Thailand) Historic Grand Prix in February, 1988.

A Car with a Mean Streak

8CM Maseratis were notoriously unpredictable when driven at speed.
Peter Giddings describes the experience of handling this Maserati in action:

"... the most difficult car I have ever driven ...
A series of quick, violent reactions to whatever
happens on a particular corner..."

Behind the Scenes

Consulting Engineer Jim Fortin applies state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and computer technology to sort out the fuel and carburetion systems.
